The Great Pumpkin has arrived

Monday, pumpkin season kicks off at 7 a.m. at the IDES Grounds on Main Street in downtown Half Moon Bay with the 38th annual Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off. Here, veteran growers will contend for the title, the $5,000 world-record prize and $20,000 in additional prize money. In a pay-by-the-pound system, the winner will take home a $6 per pound for the champion mega-pumpkin. Defending champion Ron Root of Citrus Heights won last year’s weigh-off with a 1,535-pound Atlantic Giant. The grand champion mega-gourd will be on display at the Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival, Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Main Street. In addition, the brewpub will be offering throughout the fall-season pumpkin crab bisque, cheese ravioli with prawns in roasted creamy pumpkin sauce and homemade pumpkin pie and gingersnap crust pumpkin cheesecake.
