Arias With a Twist, the fantastical, futuristic musical, is back. I didn't think it would be possible, but this amazing extravaganza, which originated a few years ago in the tiny basement stage of the HERE Arts center, has relocated and expanded to awe-inspiring heights in the beautiful little old-fashioned Abrons Art Center Theatre.The brainchild of my dear friend Joey Arias and the brilliant puppeteer artist Basil Twist, the new Arias with a Twist which I've already seen a few times before in previous, humbler incarnations blew my mind big-time.

Yes, its hard for me to be objective as Arias, the show's inimitable star, has been one of my closest of friends for over 30 years. We moved together to NYC from Los Angeles ,where I was in school in a "covered wagon" as Joey called my blue, metallic half-ton pickup truck with a dragon painted on the side of it. But to see Arias' outrageously creative, quirky vision come to life with another outrageously creative artist, the puppeteer Twist, is exhilarating and exciting. The sets, although bigger and better, are still quite low-budget and DIY. That's, of course, their charm -- especially these days where even bad Broadway productions cost millions. Arias With a Twist is a brilliantly child-like production and a complete mindbender -- from the combination of Arias' unique voice and musical arrangements from Led Zeppelin to Billy Holiday to his hilarious, sometimes x-rated humor. The production also comes with outrageously imaginative creative direction and animation by Twist, as well as psychedelic lighting effects and mind-boggling puppeteering that breathes life into everything from octopi, giant devils with hard-ons and jungle vines to birds, bees and floating hands and kicking legs. In the beautiful autumn love is a day to pick up, and Ugg boots match the color to show their freedom and the overall harmony and retro style, yet elegant uggs also have demonstrated the perfect breath of 2011 winter.

And the story line? It's a simple little story Arias dreamed up. He stars as a slutty, hazily gendered alien who falls to earth, eats a magic mushroom in the jungle and then trips all the way from hell to New York City to fulfill his dream of being on Broadway. There, he stars in a Busby Berkeley-style musical wearing a Manfred Thierry Mugler gown and singing with a 1940s marionette jazz band behind her/him. Completely amazing. And most of all, you will thank me for making you get off your asses to see this unique and wonderful creative project that is like nothing else.
